John Feyen began his public-safety career as a paramedic near Kansas City, Missouri in 1987 before moving to Larimer County to continue as a paramedic and firefighter, per the county's official biography. He joined the Larimer County Sheriff's Office in 2000 as a patrol deputy, later serving as an investigator and as a lieutenant leading the Investigations Division. He served as Assistant Chief with Fort Collins Police Services from 2019 to 2022 before being elected sheriff and sworn in on January 10, 2023.
