He went on to be Miami city manager from 2000 to 2004, a Miami-Dade County commissioner, and county mayor from 2011 to 2020, and that biography says he was first elected to Congress in 2020 and is the only current Cuban-born member of the House. He serves on the Armed Services and Homeland Security committees, chairing the Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, and on the Select Committee on Strategic Competition with China, per the same biography.
