Smith was raised in SeaTac by an adoptive family; his father was a ramp serviceman and Machinists' Union member at Sea-Tac Airport, per the campaign site. He earned a political science degree from Fordham University while working nights loading UPS trucks, and later a law degree from the University of Washington, per the campaign site. He served in the Washington State Senate from January 1991, worked as a Seattle prosecutor from 1993 to 1995 and as a judge pro tempore from 1996, and has served in the U.S. House representing Washington's 9th District since January 1997, where he is the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, per his official House website and the chamber's membership roster.
